Paddle Closed Our Payment Account. Here's What It Means for You

By Anatoly September 1, 2026
Update — September 4, 2026: Payments are back. We're live on Polar.sh, our new payment provider (a merchant of record, like Paddle was). New subscriptions and renewals are working again. Existing subscribers: your access carried over uninterrupted, and we'll email you before any billing resumes.

Today I received an email from Paddle — the payment provider behind AnkiMCP subscriptions — saying they’ve closed our account effective immediately, after a review. No specific reason was given beyond their standard categories; I’ve asked for details and will update this post if I learn more.

What this means for you, practically

  • Nothing changes about the service. Hosted Anki, sync, your decks, your data — all unaffected. This is a payments issue, not a service issue.
  • Existing subscribers: your current paid period stays active in full. Since Paddle can no longer bill, renewals simply won’t be charged until we’re live on a new payment provider — you will not lose access, and you won’t be double-billed later.
  • New subscriptions are paused until the new provider is up.

What I’m doing

I’m evaluating replacements now (Stripe is the leading candidate) and expect payments to be back within a few weeks. If your subscription lapses in the meantime, I’ll extend it manually — nobody gets cut off because of this.

Small projects get flagged by payment-risk systems all the time, often with no explanation and little recourse. It’s a known hazard of building on a merchant-of-record — I’m writing this partly so the next indie dev who gets this email knows they’re not alone.
